The borough grew up along the East Branch of the Brandywine Creek on the historic Lincoln Highway route, so the older core is compact and tied to the creek rather than laid out as a modern subdivision. Edward Kerr Memorial Park is a borough park within that core.
The Struble Trail, a paved Chester County rail trail, follows the East Branch of the Brandywine north from just outside the borough, and Marsh Creek State Park — 1,784 acres with a 535-acre lake — carries a Downingtown mailing address though the park itself lies in the townships to the northwest.
