The name comes from the Pennsylvania Railroad's main line west of Philadelphia. The communities strung along it — Merion, Narberth, Wynnewood, Ardmore, Haverford, Bryn Mawr, Rosemont, Villanova, Radnor, Wayne, Devon, Berwyn, Paoli — grew around the stations, which is why so many have walkable centers next to the tracks.
SEPTA's Paoli/Thorndale Line still serves that station order out of Center City, and Amtrak's Keystone Service stops at Ardmore and Paoli. For many buyers the practical question is which station they want to walk to.
Lower Merion in Montgomery County, Haverford Township and Radnor Township in Delaware County, and Tredyffrin/Easttown in Chester County all sit on the corridor. Two homes a few minutes apart can be in different counties and different districts.
"Main Line" is shorthand for a corridor, so the first job is translating it into an actual municipality, county and school district. These are the segments buyers most often mean:
Lower Merion Township & Narberth Borough
Montgomery County. Covers the closest-in stations — Merion, Narberth, Wynnewood, Ardmore, Haverford, Bryn Mawr — and is served by the Lower Merion School District. Narberth is its own borough with its own government.
Haverford Township
Delaware County, served by the Haverford Township School District. The township line runs near the Haverford and Bryn Mawr station areas, so a Haverford mailing address is not automatically Montgomery County.
Radnor Township
Delaware County, served by the Radnor Township School District. Includes the Villanova, Radnor, St. Davids and Wayne station areas. Wayne addresses can extend beyond Radnor Township, so the municipality must be confirmed.
Tredyffrin & Easttown Townships
Chester County, served by the Tredyffrin/Easttown School District. This is the Strafford, Devon, Berwyn, Daylesford and Paoli end of the corridor.
Because the Main Line has no legal boundary, different people include different towns. Before you compare two homes, confirm the municipality of record, the county and the assigned school district for each specific address.

The Main Line spans more than one municipality, so the district changes with the address: Lower Merion School District, Haverford Township School District, Radnor Township School District, Tredyffrin/Easttown School District. Verify the exact school assignment for the specific property address before you buy.
There is no Main Line tax rate. A property tax bill combines county, municipal and school district taxes for the specific municipality the home sits in — and those differ across Montgomery, Delaware and Chester Counties. The only reliable figure is the current tax detail for the individual address. This is general information, not tax or legal advice.
Housing along the corridor ranges from pre-war stone and colonial single-family homes near the older station villages to twins, condominiums and newer construction. Because the region spans many municipalities, the housing mix changes noticeably from one station to the next rather than following a single regional pattern.
The local detail people miss
You never buy a house in "the Main Line." You buy in Lower Merion, Narberth, Haverford Township, Radnor Township, Tredyffrin, Easttown or a neighboring municipality — and that choice sets your county, your school district, your permits and your tax bill.
No town fits every search. Here's the honest version of both sides.
Start with the municipality, not the label
Ask which township or borough a home is in, which county, and which school district — "Main Line" answers none of those.
Mailing address is not municipality
Names like Haverford, Bryn Mawr and Wayne are postal names that cross municipal and even county lines.
Pick your station
The practical difference between two Main Line locations is often which Paoli/Thorndale station you'd use and how you'd get to it.
The honest tradeoff
Direct commuter rail and walkable station villages along the corridor No single Main Line jurisdiction, so taxes, schools and municipal rules change from address to address
